Celebrate the art of dance with this beautiful silk chiffon scarf. The images of elegant dancers on this scarf are inspired by the paintings of the Parisian artist Edgar Degas (1834–1917). The scarf features warm hues of blue, green, and pink, similar to the colors and effect of the  pastels that he used later in his career. Ballerinas have become synonymous with Degas’s oeuvre; more than half of his works depict dancers. His paintings, which often resemble snapshots of a larger scene, depict the Paris of his day with intimate, penetrating honesty. 

As the Guggenheim Museum explains, Degas “cast his gaze upon Paris’s electrifying society of spectacle, painting scenes of the café-concert, the opera, and the races. He also looked to those living on the fringes of this world: alienated people drinking absinthe, laundresses, milliners, and prostitutes. Perhaps, most recognizable are his ballerinas, seen in dance classes, at rest, rehearsing, and performing. . . In the mid-1880s, his vision began to fail and the more forgiving medium of pastel became increasingly important to Degas, who fully exploited its soft, blurred contours and coloristic effects.”

The hems of the scarf are hand rolled and sewn, not machine stitched. The colors are bright and clear but, because the scarf is chiffon, they have a certain transparency. It is easily tied in a variety of ways and is large enough to wear as a light shawl.
