A crown jewel of the Art Ensemble of Chicago catalog, People In Sorrow was the first of an astonishing eight album run recorded in a two-year span following the group’s move to Paris in 1969. Recorded in Boulogne on July 7 of that year - the very same day as the session that produced the equally classic Les Stances A Sophie - the album captures the Art Ensemble’s telepathic interplay during one of their most prolific periods. Across a single 40-minute composition spread over two sides, People In Sorrow is a masterclass in atmosphere, restraint, and spontaneous composition. Although the album predates the arrival of percussionist Famoudou Don Moye, the quartet of Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, and Malachi Favors more than compensates for the absence of a drummer. The tension-building, percussion-heavy first half sets the stage for a second half that unfolds into wild and joyful clamour. Throughout, the group eschews individual solos in favor of collective dynamics and an almost monastic attention to space and texture. A haunting theme emerges almost imperceptibly as the foursome draws on a wide range of sounds from brass, reeds, woodwinds, bass, and percussion, along with the band’s trademark “little instruments.” The Art Ensemble’s slogan was “Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future” and People in Sorrow stands as a pinnacle of the group’s collective improvisation and a powerful example of true masters at work.
