Located just off the coast of northeast Florida in Nassau County, 30 miles from Jacksonville, Amelia Island is an unforgettable place. It is the southernmost of a chain of tidal and barrier islands on the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean coast, of the U.S called Sea Islands. Referred to as the Florida beach, with a Southern accent, Amelia Island boasts 13 miles of beautiful, uncrowded beaches, an abundance of native wildlife, and pristine stretches of water. It is home to the vibrant communities of Fernandina Beach and Amelia City and has a rich history that makes it unique among U.S historic sites. Pirates, rumrunners, nobles and confederates all found haven on Amelia Island, ultimately leaving their mark on the island.

It is held that Amelia Island is the site that once waved eight different flags since its discovery; the French, Spanish, British, Floridian/Patriot, Green Cross, Mexican, Confederate, and United States. French explorer and Huguenot leader Jen Ribault first claimed it for France after landing on the island in 1562, and named the island "Retreat de Mai" (Island of May). Ribault and his party encountered the first inhabitants, the Timucuan Indians who greeted them on their arrival to the island. The Spanish showed up in 1565 on Amelia Island and stuck around for almost 200 years. Fernandina was named for King Fernandina VII of Spain. Next to fly their flag over the island were the British, who in 1763 took the island into their possession. James Oglethorpe, and English army officer and the founder of the colony of Georgia, renamed the island “Amelia Island” for Princess Amelia, daughter of George II of Great Britain. The island changed hands on several occasion between colonial powers.

Amelia Island is a natural wonder, and with its abundant sunshine and mild weather, you can escape into the wild and observe the unique habitat of the island. You can tour the marsh, kayaking the waters, where you can have a closeup view of the different species of birds in the marsh, such as egrets, herons, osprey, hawks, and the majestic Peregrine falcon, along with the Tufted Titmouse, Dark-eyed Junco, and the House Finch. Amelia Island Trail runs from Peters Point Beachfront Park to Amelia Island State Park in the city of Fernandina Beach, offering views of a scenic byway and access to sandy beaches, dunes and maritime forests. Amelia Island is a treasure with a colorful history and natural splendor.
