This is an Edo-style fan, Edo-sensu. Compared to Kyo-sensu, it has a thicker structure, and the design is simpler.
The paper is dyed with Kakishibu paint, or persimmon tannin paint, which is a Japanese traditional dye using natural ingredients. It is made by fermenting and maturing the unripe astringent persimmons. In Japan, persimmon tannin has long been used as a paint, dye, and all-purpose folk medicine for its effects. It is effective as an antiseptic and moisture repellent. The fan is coated with a side layer of lacquer, Waki-Urushi, for more durability and strength.
