Changing membranes in pressure vessels is straightforward when you have the right information and tools. Follow these instructions to remove and replace membrane elements:
Step 1: Take off the end caps from the top of the membrane housings. Do this by removing the white Nylon snap ring of the Champ housing or by unscrewing the bolts that secure the clamp.
Step 2: Remove the membrane bag containing the membrane element from the shipping box.
Step 3: Cut the bag open as close as possible to the seal at the end of the bag, so you can reuse the bag if necessary.
Step 4: Take the membrane element out of the bag and remove the black core tube protectors from each end of the membrane.
Step 5: Remove parts from the parts container (if included) and inspect them. Ensure all parts are clean and free from dirt. Check the brine seal and permeate tube for nicks or cuts. Replace any damaged O-rings or brine seals.
Step 6: Observe the flow directions when installing each element in each housing.
As time goes on, membrane efficiency will decline. Generally, salt rejection remains consistent for two to three years when operated with properly pretreated feed water. The permeate flow rate may decrease slightly after a year of use, but regular flushing and cleaning can extend its lifespan. High pH levels and hardness precipitation can cause premature loss of membrane effectiveness.
Step 1: Remove the membrane element(s) from the housings by pulling them out from the top. You may need heavy-duty pliers and channel lock pliers to remove the old membrane element.
Step 2: Install the brine seal side of the membrane elements first. For housings with a bottom-to-top flow direction, place the brine seal at the bottom end of the membrane element.
Step 3: Lubricate the brine seal with a food-grade lubricant.
Step 4: Insert the membrane at a slight angle while gently rotating it. Be careful not to tear or flip the brine seal. Re-lubricate the seal if needed.
Step 5: Push the membrane element into the housing with a smooth, steady motion. Ensure the brine seal enters the housing without coming out of the groove. Use a slow twisting motion to keep the brine seal in place.
Step 6: Re-install the end caps by twisting them gently while pushing them onto the housing. Avoid pinching or damaging any O-rings. Push until the end plug is flush with the outer diameter of the membrane housing.
Step 7: Insert the nylon snap ring until it is fully seated and can be spun in place. For stainless steel housings, install the clamp halves and tighten the bolts until the halves meet.
Step 8: Reconnect any fittings that were disconnected during the membrane element removal.
Step 9: Follow the Start-Up procedure to restart the system.
CAUTION: New or factory-cleaned membranes come in a preservative solution. Flush new or cleaned membranes for at least an hour to remove the preservative. Discard all permeate and concentrate produced during the flush.
