During the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD, glass craftsmanship flourished in the Roman Empire, with many glass products being manufactured and exported as trade goods. Glass products made along the Mediterranean coast spread to vast regions, reaching as far as Northern Europe and Japan.
Initially, most glass items were opaque, but from the 1st century onwards, transparent glass gained popularity and spread widely. Beads made as jewelry were highly valued, while glass fragments from cups and pitchers with holes drilled in them were more commonly found and can still be acquired relatively inexpensively today.
