The Ngatoroirangi Rock Carving on Lake Taupō is one of New Zealand’s most remarkable contemporary Māori artworks. Towering 14 metres above the water, it draws visitors from across the North Island to admire its scale and detail. In 1976, master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell envisioned the tattooed face of Ngatoroirangi while paddling past a rock alcove, fulfilling his grandmother’s wish to create a lasting connection to their ancestors. Over four years, Matahi and a team of artists transformed the rock face into a masterpiece, with surrounding carvings depicting tupuna (ancestors) and kaitiaki (guardians) central to the stories of the local iwi. This print captures the grandeur, history, and cultural significance of the Mine Bay carvings, bringing a piece of Taupō’s heritage into your home.
