Original watercolour and bodycolour (gouache) on paper, framed floated and raised in on a soft white mount, in a white wood grain box frame. The artwork is behind low reflect 70% UV filter glass and measures 80 x 60 cm.
‘Aftak’ is a Shetlandic word which describes a lull in a storm, and can also mean an improvement in the weather. Peter’s regular coastal walks and the incredible view from his studio means that he easily notices subtle changes of light upon surface. These are particularly powerful when viewed against a dark, brooding sky. White gouache (bodycolour, to use its Victorian name) is used here over the transparent watercolour to add impact and contrast. This white opaque pigment dates back over 500 years and some think it may have even been used in Ancient Egypt.
